Where Does the Name Givéh Come From?
People often ask how to say it, and what it means. Givéh — gee-veh — is the name of a traditional Persian shoe.
The shoe
Givéh are handwoven shoes, made in Iran for centuries. The uppers are woven by hand, thread by thread, usually from cotton. The soles are built to last years of walking. Every pair passes through many hands before it's finished — spinners, weavers, sole-makers — each doing one part of the work slowly and well.
They were never a luxury item. They were everyday shoes: light, breathable, comfortable enough to wear from morning to night, sturdy enough to be repaired rather than replaced. In a lot of Persian households, a good pair of givéh simply lasted.
That's what the name holds for me: craftsmanship, comfort, timelessness, durability. Four quiet things, all in one object.
Why I chose it
When I started this brand, the first idea was exactly that — to take something traditional and handmade, and carry it into the present. Not to copy the shoe, but to work the way the shoe was made: by hand, one piece at a time, with materials chosen to last.
Givéh the brand does with knitwear what givéh the shoe did with weaving. The pieces are knitted, crocheted, and embroidered. The yarns are the best I can find — merino wool, cashmere and alpaca blends, organic cotton — because a piece made slowly deserves materials that hold up to years of wear. The goal is clothing you reach for without thinking: comfortable enough for every day, made carefully enough to feel considered.
The names carry it forward
The naming tradition runs through the whole collection. Most pieces carry Persian words: Aftab means sun. Darya means sea. Gol means flower. Kaj means diagonal. Rú means face. Small words, each one chosen the way the pieces are made — simply, and with intention.
A name is a promise, in a way. Every time I write Givéh on a label, it reminds me what the work is supposed to be: something made intentionally, and to add comfort, color, and style.
